1 KKK member, an angry mob outside a courthouse with baseball bats to hold signs, and a whole load of law enforcement is what I got to experience this morning. It seems like I’ve covered a lot of yelling matches this year.
Photographing similar events gets repetitive. Same style. Same angry faces. Same outcomes.
So I decided to do try something stupid to make things look different— pop a giant softbox in front of angry protesters faces. I handheld a softbox in one hand and put a wide angle lens on and took portraits. I tried to purposely make something that looked totally different than what I normally do and pretty stylized as well. There’s a lot of things I would do differently the next time I shoot like this, but I am planning on trying this a few more times. Many thanks to HT photographer Jeremy Hogan for being ridiculously kind and offering to hold the softbox for the opening shot.
